Wreckfest is a game I picked up a few days ago after reading positive reviews in Rock Paper Shotgun.....

and in Polygon

The biggest thing against the game is it's price, which on steam is about £40. So think of it as a slightly cheaper than Cod game hole in the wallet. I mention it up front in case it kills the idea dead for you. If not - read on.

I haven't yet ventured into the multiplayer games. First and foremost I'd like to be able to beat the bots on medium before I start playing against people. However I thought I'd mention it to you guys because I find that after a few hours of playing with the clan against some very irritating humans, there is something very satisfying about choosing a car and a track and then thrashing your way to the front of the line against 23 bots who both behave like humans (in that they try to win, but if you nudge them a little will ignore winning and try to decimate you) and yet don't appear to cheat.

The game is both race and Demolition Derby. Tracks vary from convoluted twists and turns through countryside, to dirt loops and figure 8's (the latter make being in the lead particularly hazardous whenever you reach the cross over point), to round walled arenas where the object is to destroy and survive. The majority of the vehicles are American style rear wheel drive things but there are a few European cars with front wheel drive as well as some oddities (last night I found myself in a tiny 3 wheeler trying to get out in front of about 12 coaches without getting mashed (it did not go well for me).

The game is Pretty. Not that you get a lot of time to admire it but when you're racing you feel you're somewhere. You can drive from a third person or first person perspective (the only flaw with that is you can't see your hands on the wheel - I guess the animation would be too complicated or something. It's a minor point.

Incidentally, I tried playing the game with keyboard controls. I highly recommend using a Wireless Xbox controller. The keyboard can be remapped but it's just not very comfortable. The controller makes it much more do-able. I mean if you've got a wheel then that would be better still I'm sure ( I even looked but the cost of those things is prohibative and frankly for one dip in game I don't see the value - but if I had one already I'd have hooked it up for sure).

Also watching these guys play the game I suspect on either a LAN set up or else with one as host entertained me a lot

This is not a realism game. This is a Fun game.

Of course, I temper my comments with the fact that the last racing game I played and enjoyed was Flat Out, which was a while ago. But this how I relax after an evening of Cod.
