We are currently spread out across at least 3 multiplayer games. Certainly in two of them the biggest problem is the cheating public. Whilst I know some people are loath to return to old games, can I get a show of hands/heads, of people who might be interested in us going back to Cod4 for a bit on a server we rent, set up how we want and LOCK the cheating bastards out of.
This is purely hypothetical. Just to see if enough people would be interested to make it worth the effort and cost of setting it up and doing the admin. We've done it before with sort of 3 players and it's ok for DM but if only two turn up....on any map other than kill house and shipment it becomes a pain.
Will leave this up for a bit and try and get word to those who hit the forums less than once upon a time.

I'd be up for that Maggs, running a server would be easy and cost only about £9.00 a month. Some nights of TR only* fun would put the colour back into a lot of cheeks I reckon. * And possibly a few public, under our control.

Um.
So a few questions.
Does the server need /use punkbuster? Does the server need to be public for players to rank up?
And perhaps more importantly, do we want it unpassworded and the info in the public forums?
For me much of the point of this is playing with people I trust on a game I like. I suppose you can apply the "everyone member of TR was a stranger till they joined" approach. But successive games have taught me that there are a lot more cheating crapheads out there than nice fair players.

Ah. Another question. My patch collection for cod 4 goes up to 1.7. Your server is 1.8 ?? Can't connect. Where's the other patch?
Is this an official patch even, or related to the later hi res version of cod4?

Bugger.
It seems those of us installing the game from CD will end up with version 1.7.
The Steam version of the game is 1.8.
We will all need to be on the same version to play together; the new server is at version 1.8.
Question is, who has not got the Steam version of the game?

From what I've read the Steam version 1.8 is a mixed joy. If you have 1.8 you can't play on 1.7 servers, and if you have 1.7 you can't play on 1.8 servers.
(Mine is a 1.7)
This explains why when I run the game and look at the list of servers I see roughly 2000 but not the TR one. When Falky runs the game he sees roughly 25 servers (presumably the 1.8's)
1.8 fixed some particular exploits (RCC) and that's all it was for. It also broke some games. You cannot (I've read) download the 1.8 through steam, though I believe LA and Falky both have 1.8 version games. I'm not entirely sure 1.8 is an official patch.
I'm a bit leery of downloading the file as it's now quite old so none of the respectable sites seem to have it and I've had security block me from downloading from other sites.

It looks like the only way to safely get past this problem is to buy the Steam version.
